Alicia Keys kicks off holiday season in Tokyo at top of Japan's charts

TOKYO - The Christmas season starts early in Tokyo and singer Alicia Keys was there to help it get going.

The nine-time Grammy award winner made a brief appearance at a Tokyo office building Thursday to sing a few songs from her new album, "As I Am," and wish a crowd of several hundred a happy holiday season - with a three-storey-tall Christmas tree lit up in bright pink behind her.

"My new name is Alicia Trees," she said.

Keys has a lot to celebrate.

Her album, released Nov. 13, has risen to the top of the Japanese charts. Her single "No One" topped the Billboard charts in the United States.

She said the album's success shows the universal appeal of her music.

"I want to reach all kinds of listeners. It means a lot to me that people from all places can appreciate the music," she said. "I can't wait to come back for a big tour."

First, however, she said she wants to go back to the United States to spend a quiet holiday season.

"Christmas is always special for me," she said. "I like to have a big meal with my family."

Alicia speaks on emotional issues. After being on the road a long time, about two and a half years just touring, performing and traveling, she went right to her first film (Smoking Aces) then went home in hopes that she'd relax and gather herself. But unfortunately, she was faced with a sick family member which frustrated and angered her.

She dealt with heavy and intense emotions and felt like she almost lost it. She was dealing with personal growth and transitioning as a person. She speaks on forgetting herself while doing things for others, friends, family and business people. She recalls a time when she could not say no. She finally learned to say no for her well-being. Had she not gone away on a vacation, she would've had a nervous breakdown. She dealt with borderline depression. She went to Egypt. Wow, Egypt. She went to Egypt by herself. That's my girl. I love Alicia Keys. She found herself in Egypt, saw the temples, swam in the red sea, saw the pyramids and sang there. Wow, I love this girl. I never knew these things about her. She said the people in Egypt left her alone while there. She was there in Egypt for 2 weeks and spent a week in Italy. She's inspiring me to take a trip to a foreign land by myself. I ain't scared! You scared? I've always wanted to visit Europe but Egypt, that's so exotic!

She speaks a bit on her album and states, "You have to take me as I am."

Ms. Beyonce hit the red carpet in a tight fitting gold number. She looked great.



Alicia Keys looked pretty in a black number.



Rihannas red carpet outfit was a big disappointment. I was expecting her to match or exceed her glamorous look from the World Music Awards. This outfit is a big miss. She needs to go back to square one and try again.



Speaking of misses, Solange Knowles showed up in a dress that looked like a sack. It gives her no shape at all. I like her shoes and hair. That's it.



Ashanti hit the red carpet in a yellow/gold dress. She looks pretty. After having a better look at her dress, I like it.



Chris Brown was also on the red carpet.



Nicole Scherzinger wore a simple yet elegant dress which I like along with her hairstyle.



Kelly Pickler was there. I like the back of her dress.



Queen Latifah.



Omarosa was there. Her 15 minutes of fame is stretching into 30.



Carrie Underwood wore a pretty white dress. I love the flower ensemble in the front.
